Pavlo Vyshebaba spends peacetime campaigning for the ecosystem and animal legal rights.

We woke up from explosions in the space,” he tells The Independent, recounting the very first day of the invasion on 24 February. “I took my relatives to safety – sent them abroad – and returned to join the armed forces of Ukraine.
“Now, I am schooling to be an powerful soldier. Just before the war, I hadn’t even held a gun in my palms.”
He claims he sees no contradiction in his activism and common lifetime, which sees him stick to a vegan lifestyle to avoid harming animals and minimize his carbon footprint, and his job in the military.
“The animals are just like young children in their innocence, and I feel it would be unattainable for me to damage them,” he suggests. Rather, he calls the opposition army “anything but innocent”.
“They invaded our land and began brutally murdering civilians – our mother and father, wives, friends and kin,” the 38-yr-old suggests.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, accused Russia of committing the “most horrible war crimes” given that the Second World War, which includes capturing civilians in cold blood and crushing them with tanks, in an address to the United Nations Safety Council on Tuesday.
